My 1936 Viking

8.5 HP Model 496

This motor came to me in great condition, so I attempted to preserve it in original condition.

As acquired at the AOMCI Maple Leaf Chapter meet in March 2008, from fellow collector Rob Abbot. No parts to find for this one, just a lot of grime to clean!

Serial # 0004!

The magneto was fouled with what seems to be motor oil. Apparently if you run these old motors with modern TCW3 oils it can slip past the upper crankcase seal and foul the ignition.

This one needed to be completely dismantled.

I coated the decal with petroleum jelly for cleaning the inside of the tank. The fuel system was clogged and needed to be completely dismantled for cleaning. A little Olive Oil and some superfine steel wool cleaned the decal nicely.

This motor is unbelievable shape overall, all of the gaskets were reused, including the gasket between the lower unit and the leg, the first I have found intact on a motor of this vintage. I resisted the temptation to use polish, what you see here is a really clean (and waxed) original condition motor!

It runs and starts even better than it looks!
