A 1954 Canadian Challenger!

Constructed on May 4th 1954 in Peterbrough Ontario Canada, by the Canadian Canoe Co. a subsidiary of the Peterbrough Canoe Co.

Pictured here on the water at the AOMCI Tomahawk Nationals, July 30-August 2nd 2008

Where it was voted "Best Classic Boat and Motor Combination" and received the "Collectors Choice" award for the meet.

Pictured here on display at the July 2009 AOMCI Super Meet at Constantine MI with the second motor to grace her transom, a nice original 1957 Johnson Javelin.

It won "Best Classic Boat and Motor Combination!"

Here she is on the water at White Water Lake in the spring of 2009 with the Javelin

Here is the view into the cockpit.

Here it is with a nice original 1959 35 hp Viking...

and this is the fastest of the motors I have had on her!

This nice original 1958 Electric Starting 25 hp Viking was aquired in 2014 and tuned up for the summer of 2015.

Her Story...

As acquired in the fall of 2005, with a 1961 Evinrude 28 hp Speedytwin. Found in the local 'Bargain Hunter' Magazine, she apparently sat under those tarps for over two years with no one even looking at her for quite some time! Her second owner put her on the roller trailer over five years ago, but she was previously stored in a boathouse.

I immediately stripped the loose deck hardware and fried electrical system and installed a more approprate 1958 25 hp Viking. I re-outfitted her with a more appropriate gator bunk trailer already in my possesion.

Then it was off to Whitewater Lake (Azilda ON).

She worked fine and was still floating after a night on
the water. She needed alot of work however to make her last.

The Preservation...

The mahogany decks had been stained and the varnish and the nails had failed. They were removed and stripped.

The hull looked OK, however, removal of the paint, keel and rubstrips showed why steel fastners should NEVER be used on wooden boats!

Most of the ribs were cracked and rotten around the keelson, eventually most of the ribs were removed and new stock scarfed in.

Sections of planking were also removed and replaced.
Here she is with her new ribs.

All epoxied together and primed for re-painting.
The hull turned out very strong and was not fiberglassed.

Everything was stripped and re-varnished prior to re-installation. Notice the mahogany steering wheel, a present from my brother-in-law who enjoys classic car restoration.

Ready to Go!

After 5 long months of work she is finally ready for her test float!

I replaced the stern light and the steering wheel and added a horn and flag pole in the place of a second stern light?

Spring cleanup 2007

After receiving new decals I decided to strip the topsides and give the whole boat a few more coats.

Two fresh coats on the bottom, three on the inside, five more for the decks and 8 coats for the topsides.

Back together and ready to roll with a freshly painted outboard. Click here for the details of it's repaint!

Other Places she has been...

We love to take this boat with us camping.

2011-2012 Rebuild

Rot happens! I discovered this in the spring of 2011 when I decided it was time for a revarnishing.

The inner and outer keel and a some of the planking needed to be replaced!

Here is the freshly painted bottom.

And the freshly varnished topsides.

Here she is finally back on the water in late June of 2012 at the MLC meet at Hammock Harbour in Orillia Ontario.

2012 Seat Project

While we had made up some fabric seats in 2008 these were already well faded and dirty by 2012.

So we got some marine vinyl for a good price and after many hours at the sewing machine...

It was well worth the effort and the color really compliments the new motor!
